Your child isn't giving you a hard time. They're having one.

Read it again, slowly, because it changes everything about the school-run meltdown.

A child screaming about the wrong socks is not manipulating you. Their nervous system is on fire and the socks are just where the flames came out. Kids don't have a calm way to say "I'm overwhelmed" — so they show you instead. Loudly. Usually when you're already late.

Behaviour is communication. Your job in that moment isn't to win, correct, or teach a lesson. The lesson can't land anyway — nobody learns anything mid-meltdown, including us.

Your job is to be the calm they don't have yet. Low voice. Fewer words. Stay close. You're lending them your steady until theirs comes back online.

And when yours is gone too? That's not failure, that's biology. Step back, breathe, repair after. Auntie promise: the repair teaches them more than the perfect response ever would.
